Born on the 7th October 1917, the birth being
registered during the December quarter 1917 in the
Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1191, the daughter of
David Ernest & Martha Jane Hicks (nee Woodworth).

Hicks - Single - Born on the 13th September 1939 -

[Barbara was born in the Blackpool R.D. during the
September quarter 1939 - she died in infancy early
in 1940]

CWGC - of 72 Church Street, Hulme. Daughter of
David Ernest and Martha Jane Hicks. Died at 72
Church Street.

David's death was registered during the January
quarter 1941 in the Manchester R.D. - ref: 8d/103
- aged: 65.  His wife - Martha Jane Hicks was
killed in the same incident - Manchester R.D. -
ref: 8d/103 - aged: 63.   Their daughter - Lily
Hicks was also killed in this incident -
Manchester R.D. - ref: 8d/103.

The 14th March 1941 edition of the Manchester
Evening News reported:    HICKS – Due to enemy
action, DAVID, MARTHA, and LILY HICKS, the dearly
beloved dad, mother, and sister of Flo, Bertha,
and Phoebe. Service at the Manchester Crematorium
on Saturday, March 15, at 4 pm. All enquiries and
flowers to T. H. Pepperdine Ltd, 130 Alexandra
Road, Manchester 16.

I am most grateful to Ken Craven for the following
information:   "I was born and brought up in
Hulme, and my Dad was a friend of the Hicks family
– we lived at 69 Church Street, diagonally
opposite the Hicks’s house.  My dad told me he
and David Hicks were on duty that night but
finished as the sirens went off and they both
returned to their homes to take shelter there."
