Born on the 29th June 1903, the birth being
registered during the September quarter 1903 in
the Oldham R.D. - ref: 8d/635, the son of James &
Ellen Hilton (nee Lawton).

1911 Census - 19 Elm Street, Hollinwood, Oldham.  
  Son - aged: 7 - born: Oldham.    Head of
household - James Hilton - Married - aged: 38 -
occ: Cotton Operative (Spinner) - born: Oldham.  
Also - Ellen Hilton - Wife - aged: 39 - born:
Manchester.    Plus 3 siblings and an Irish Navvy
lodger.

Married Mary A. Fenton during the March quarter
1926 in the Oldham R.D. - ref: 8d/1006.

1939 National Registration - 13 MacDonald Street,
Oldham.  Joseph Hilton - Married - Born: 29th June
1903 - occ: Transport Driver (Heavy Worker) &
A.F.S. No.948.   Mary Hilton - Married - Born: 5th
November 1901.

Sent down from his base at Oldham Fire Station to
assist the local firemen at Trafford Park during
the Manchester Blitz 22nd/23rd & 23rd/24th
December 1940.  Killed in Trafford Park.

CWD Report No. 46.    Died at Trafford Park from
where his body was recovered at 13.00 hrs on the
24th December 1940 and taken to the City Road
Mortuary, Old Trafford.    His body was identified
by his friend from the Oldham Fire Brigade - Harry
Potts Mills and released to him for burial.

Joseph was one of the five Oldham firemen killed
in this incident.   According to a family member
of one of the firemen who attended to these five
men.

Death registered in the Stretford Borough.  Buried
on 28/12/1940.

Death reported in the ----------------- edition of
the ------------------------------- which states
that he resided at 13 MacDonald Street, Hathershaw
and left behind a widow and 2 children   He was
employed at the Oldham Ice Co and joined the Fire
Service on the 11th May 1939.
