Born during the March quarter 1916 in the Salford
R.D. - ref: 8d/174, the son of William & Charlotte
Phillips (nee Haigh).

Married Ellen Smith during the June quarter 1936
in the Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/921.   They produced
two sons - Stanley Roy Phillips (b.1938) and
Geoffrey Phillips (b.late 1942).

1939 National Registration - No Trace, so probably
already serving in the armed forces.  No trace of
Ellen either.

Serving in the 1st Battalion, Manchester Regiment.
  Service No.3860301.

Killed at Withernsea, East Coast of Yorkshre.  
Manning the East Coast Defences - part of an Ack,
Ack, Battery perhaps?  Three bombs were dropped on
Withersea at 18.26 hrs on the 24th July 1942 by a
German Dornier Mk IIK Bomber, killing 12 civilians
and 3 soldiers.  One landed on the beach, the
second on the Octagon Cafe and the third, onto
Queen Street, where Mr. Dawson's Butchers was
hit.

M.I. "Your duty was nobly done, we know that you
have passed from death unto life".

in the Holderness R,D. - ref: 9d/76.

CWGC - Son of William & Charlotte Phillips of
Pendleton, Salford.  Husband of Ellen Phillips of
Hazel Grove, Cheshire.

Manchester Evening News - Roll of Honour.   Killed
as a result of enemy action - aged: 26 - Husband
of Ellen & father of Stanley & Roy Phillips of 12
Berkeley Road, Hazel Grove.   Service at St.
Paul's, Ellor Street, Pendleton at 2.00 pm Friday
followed by interrment at Weaste Cemetery.   Son
of Mr. Mrs. Phillips of 36 Chaney Street,
Pendleton.
