Four fire-watchers were on duty at the premises of
William Arnold Ltd, Brook Street, Chorlton on
Medlock. A fire was discovered in piles of wood
at 01.30hrs on the 4th March 1944. William
Shepherd, an ex-member of the old A.F.S.
telephoned the N.F.S. to report the fire and eight
machines turned out to attend the incident.

William was found th be missing, so three members
of the N.F.S. entered the blazing single storey
building to try and rescue him, but despite
repeated attempts, during which they suffered
minor injuries themselves, the flames and smoke
were too much for them and they failed to locate
William. His body was recovered close to the
rear entrance of the assembly shop at 05.45hrs
that morning. Ironically, the place from where
William telephoned the N.F.S. was not affected by
the fire.

Death registered during the January quarter 1944
in the Manchester R.D. - ref: 8d/101 - aged: 53.
