registered during the June quarter 1897 in the
Rochdale R.D. - ref: 8e/30, the only son of Samuel
& Catherine Johnson (nee Hillman).

Rochdale Observer - 7th October 1942.  COOKING
CENTRE TRAGEDY - FIRE WATCHER FOUND DEAD.   An
assistant cook  at the Brown Hill Cooking Centre
arrived at the Centre to begin work at about 6
o'clock on Monday morning and found Fire Watcher,
aged: 45 of 45 Watkin Street, Rochdale, dead on a
bed in a small kitchen.   John is employed at the
Centre as a Kitchen Porter and on a Sunday night
went there to perform fire watching duties.  The
case has been reported to the County Coroner,
Mt=r. Stanley Turner, who will conduct an inquest
this morning.  It is understood that evidence will
be submitted regarding the position  of a gas
cooker from which gas was issuing when the
assistant cook arrived.

Rochdale Observer - 10th October 1942.  FIRE
WATCHER GASSED - FOUND DEAD AT COOKING CENTRE.  
An inquest was held on Wednesday.  It was
concluded that whilst putting up the Black-out
screens, he would have had to squeeze along a 12
inch gap at the side of the cooker and had
accidentally knocked the tap with his clothing.  
The verdict was that he died from gas poisoning
through accidentally inhaling gas from a domestic
cooker.
