This memorial started out as a 6 metre high stone obelisk memorial erected outside the Royal Artillery Officer's H.Q aka the Drill Hall, Hyde Road, Ardwick. This Victorian building was bombed on the 12th March 1941 and destroyed, as was the R.A. Memorial in front of it. 12 Royal Engineers were killed in this incident when they were using the building as a billet. Contemporary photographs courtesy of Manchester Library Archives. The Drill Hall at the rear of the HQ was repaired and remained in use until the 1990s. It is now a commercial factory. After WW2 what remained of the RA memorial was salvaged to create a new wall mounted memorial, now displayed in Belle Vue TA Centre. |
