Originally contained the names of 1,027 Firemen and 28 Firewomen who, were killed in the line of duty during the German bombing of England during WW2. In 2003 the base plinth was extended to accommodate the names of another 1,192 Firemen and Firewomen killed in the line of duty in peacetime. It was then that it was re-sited at the southern end of the Jubilee Bridge. It was Winston Churchill that coined the title "Heroes with Grimy Faces". St. Paul's Cathedral would not be here today had it not been for them. For more information contact:- http://firefightersmemorial.org.uk/ |
