"The Williams family were one of those affected by
the Failsworth bomb in Nelson Street on 28th
November 1940, with mother, father and their
youngest daughter being killed. They lived at
number 10, and the bomb killed many of the
neighbours on their side of the street. (Right
hand side looking down the cul-de-sac).  Samuel
Williams with his wife Emma and daughter Louisa
were buried on the 6th December in Failsworth
cemetery, imagine the grief of their five
surviving sons and daughters.

The Williams were closely associated with the
nearby Ebenezer Baptist Church, where several of
the daughters (none of whom married) were Sunday
School teachers. Living across the same small
street of a dozen terraced houses and surviving
the bomb were the Joynes family, whose son Harold
would later become Pastor of the church. Being
very much God-fearing people one wonders what they
made of their families' contrasting fate.

the second map represents the area now. Hobson
Street runs parallel to Oldham Road (A62) as it
enters Failsworth from Newton Heath (the boundary
line can be seen on Linwood Street on the modern
map). The Baptist Church is marked in the bottom
left corner of the old map. The wider map shows
the location relative to Manchester."

aged; 71.
