Geoff Williams whose family resided at 116 St.
Werburgh's Road, relates the following story about
the incident that killed Annie.

Annie was a widow with a seven year old son.  The
air raid warning had only just been sounded and as
she left her Anderson air raid shelter to attend
to her Air Raid Warden duties an H.E. bomb landed
in her back garden, to the left hand side and to
the rear of the shelter.  There were four
occupants of the shelter at the time.   The blast
blew her out into the road and she bled to death
before anyone discovered her.   Geoff's family
were away at Tideswell at the time.    Geoff
states that two bombs were dropped - the other one
destoyed the Post Office. 

The explosion destroyed Nos. 118 & 120 St.
Werburgh's Road (originally numbered 40 & 42),
also the house immediately behind them on Ergerton
Road South - all three houses had to be
demolished.   Nos. 116 & 122 were badly damaged
and uninhabitable until after the war had finished
and the materials were available to restore
them."
