Charles Dakin - Single - Born: 9th December 1901 -
occ: Locomotive Fireman. Also recorded as a
separate family are the Ricketts family who were
also killed in this incident, together with
Charles Dakin.
CWD Report No. 94. Died at 34 Stanley Road, Old
Trafford, from where her body was recovered at
02.30 hrs on the 24th December 1940 and taken to
the Church Street Mortuary, Stretford. Her body
was identified by her Son-in-Law - Alfred H.
Knowles and released for burial to the Council's
Undertaker Contractor - R. Pepperdine, 31 Ayres
Road, Old Trafford.
Killed when a land mine landed on Stanley Road,
Old Trafford. This was the worst single incident
in terms of loss of life in the whole of Greater
Manchester during WW2. In total, thirty three
persons were killed.
Recorded as Alice Diana Hill in the Stretford
Memorial Book. Her husband - Thomas and their
son, also - Thomas, were both killed in this
incident, as was their married daughter - Nellie
Smith and her husband William Harcourt Smith.
Buried 27/12/1940 - Burial No. 17,855.
CWGC - of 32 Stanley Road, Old Trafford. Wife of
Thomas Hill. Died at 32 Stanley Road.
