American Citizen, born: on the 18th April 1918 at
Chanmbersburg, Pennsylvania, USA the son of
Gernard Leslie & Louise Johnston Elliott,
Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, USA.


He worked for the Stanley Company as a Shipping
Clerk from 1935 to 1936, he then worked as a
general electrical contractor until he became a
flight instructor at his local airport - the
Sunset  Airport, Chambersburg, PA.   He travelled
to England c1941 and had a one year contract with
the A.T.A. terminating on the 16th February 1942,
which the A.T.A. wanted to extend.  But Bill had
dcided to return to America on completion of his
contract.  He was sadly killed just a week away
from that date.

Killed in a flying accident at 6 miles east of
Brough, Westmorland.   Death registered during the
March quarter 1942 in the Westmorland North R.D. -
ref: 10b/1373 - aged: 24.

Buried on 11/02/1942 along with and beside a
fellow American - Earl Lamar Renicker - Burial No.
11,223.

AM118 - 1st Off William Johnston Elliott, ATA,
6FPP, 24.  Flying an Avro Anson 652 No. W1793 with
a Cheetah MkIX engine, was being ferried from
Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire, to Kirkbride,
Cumbria.  In bad weather, he crashed into Mt.
Buckles Heath, South Stainmoor, near Kirkby
Stephen, Cumbria.

It was concluded that he crashed into the side of
a hill 3 miles north of kirkby Stephen,
Westmorland in bad weather conditions when the
ground was snow covered casing confusion between
ground and cloud.

No. 6 Ferry Pilot Pool was situated at Radcliffe,
Leicestershire.
