I am the half sister of Eric Deakin who died at
the family home, 66 Davies Street, Eccles on May
8th 1941 with his mother Winifred Deakin. Eric was
22 months old. His (and my) father was Ernie
Deakin who lived in Eccles and Worsley until 1971.
Ernie worked at Hattersley's Lacrosse Works,
originally in Gilda Brook Road and then in Winton
until he retired in 1980. My father and I visited
the memorial in 1993 when we were in the area. My
father knew the Fennellys (the other family that
were killed at the same time) and I understood
that they lived very close to him. Ernie's mother
lived at 6 Davies Street. It was interesting to
hear about the Green family and their death dates.
My father died on May 8th 1998: 57 years to the
day after Eric and Winifred. My thanks to the
organisers of the ceremony and to those who
attended.
