of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Giles; husband
of Annie Giles. Died at Hope Hospital.

Giles received his medical education at Edinburgh
University, King's College and Middlesex Hospital.
He was assistant medical superintendent to
Bermondsey Parish Infirmary and resident medical
officer for Middlesborough Union Hospital before
being appointed medical superintendent to South
Shields Union Infirmary. In around 1915 Giles was
appointed medical superintendent to Hope Hospital
Salford and was also medical officer for Salford
Old People's Homes and Salford Municipal Maternity
and Babies' Hospital. Giles was said to have
transformed Hope Hospital from a poor law
institution to a well-equipped municipal centre.
Giles and his wife were killed by air raids at
Hope Hospital in December 1940.

Dr. John Dudgeon Giles O.B.E., Medical
Superintendent of Hope Hospital, Salford was
killed by enemy action in Decenber 1940.  He was
the son of the late Rev. Alexander Giles of
Ashkirk, Selkirkshire and was educated at the
University of Edinburgh, where he graduated in
1909, being commended for his thesis.  He also
studied in London at King's College & Middlesex
Hospitals.  After graduating he served as
Assistant Medical Superintendent of Bermondsey
Parish Infirmary as resident Medical Officer of
Middlesbrough Union Hospital and as Medical
Superintendent of South Shields Union Infirmary. 
At Salford, in addition to being in charge of the
Hope Hospital, he was Medical Officer to the
Salford Municipal Maternity & Babies Hospital.  He
had been a member of the British Medical
Association for twenty years.
