Son of William George Davies, and of Gertrude
Davies (neé Bennett). Died at 64 Cecil Road.

Three members of this family were killed at No. 64
Cecil Road, Higher Blackley on the night of the
9th/10th January 1941.  Gertrude Davies: aged, 37.
 Eiralys Gertrude Davies: aged, 14.  Bryn John
Davies: aged, 4 months.

The father - Manchester City Policeman - George
William Davies had just left home and was waiting
at a bus stop when the bomb landed.  He rushed
back to his house - the first person on the scene,
only to find that his wife and two children had
been killed.


According to the Manchester Bomb Maps, the first
of six H.E. bomb landed on this house, the 2nd &
3rd bombs on the school playground at the rear of
it.  The 4th landed on No. 18 Ethel Avenue.  The
5th landed on Rochdale Road 
just south of its junction with Victoria Avenue,
adjacent to the Avenue Cinema.  The 6th landed in
the middle of Kingston Grove at its junction with
Victoria Avenue.

The bombing seems to have been random - 17 people
were killed that night, but the deaths were widely
distributed from Lymm, Hale Barns, Swinton,
Longsight, Gorton, Bolton and Rochdale.
