A full time Fireman - a "Policeman" by virtue that
all Manchester FB men were sworn in as such.
According to the Police Memorial website, he was
killed by falling masonry in Parker Street,
Manchester.

died in Parker Street, near Piccadilly and that he
was to be buried in Preston. Commemorated on the
Manchester City FB Memorial.

CWGC - Police Fireman, City of Manchester Fire
Brigade. Husband of Lilian Albert, of 230
Parrswood Road, Withington. Died at Mosley Street
and Back George Street.
Probate granted at Manchester on the 12th December
1941. Killed on the 23rd December 1940 - his
body was found at George Street, Manchester on the
25th December 1940. Estate valued at £198. 5.

Manchester Evening News dated 23rd December 1941 -
"Roll of Honour. Sadly missed by his colleagues
at Withington Fire Station".
Lancashire Evening Post dated 27th December 1940 -
"Son of the late George Albert and Mrs. Sarah A.
Lyon of Greyfriers Crescent, Cadley. A native of
Preston he attended Emmanuel School after which he
joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16. He was
one of the survivors of HMS Nottingham, when she
was torpedoed and sunk and later served in the
Battle of Jutland. After WW1 he served in the
new cruiser HMS Capetown during a three year tour
of South Africa, the West Indies and the Pacific.
Aged 27 he left the navy and joined the
Manchester City Fire Brigade. He leaves behind a
wife and 14 year old son".
Having fired 136 six inch shells during the Battle
of Jutland, HMS Nottingham was sunk by Submarine
U-52 on the 19th August 1916 - she survived the
first two torpedoes, but was sunk by the third 25
minutes later. She had a complement of 480 men.
