John enlisted into the royal Navy on the 9th July
1917 Service No. M26755. He was 5 feet 3 inches
in height and his chest measurement was 32 3/4
inches. He had Light Brown hair, Brown eyes and
a Fresch complexion. His occupation was given as
a Fitter and his place of birth - Salford. He
served on HMS Pembroke II from the 9th July until
the 28th August 1917. He then served on HMS
Vivid II from the 29th August 1917 until he was
demobbed on the 19th February 1919.
HMS Pembroke II was a shore based R.N.A.S. at
Eastchurch between 1913 and 1918. HMS Vivid II
was another shore based station for Stokers and
Engine Room Artificers School at Devonport.
Having served in the Navy during WW1, John was
appointed a sergeant in the Salford Fire Brigade
in 1919. Appointed as Chief Superintendent of
the Salford Fire Brigade in 1936. He retired in
March 1943 due to ill health following injuries he
received in a fire.

Died at his home at Rivington Road, Pendleton.

FORMER SALFORD FIRE CHIEF DEAD - John Stranaghan
retired as Salford's Fire Chief in March 1943.
He died today at his home in Rivington Road,
Pendleton, aged: 53, after a long illness. After
serving as a Royal Naval Artificer, he joined the
Salford Cleansing Department in 1918 (he wasn't
demobbed until 1919 !), as a Mechanical Engineer.
In 1919 he was appointed a Sergeant in the
Salford Fire Brigade. Rapid promotion followed
and he was appointed Chief Superintendent in 1936.
His retirement was due to ill health following
injuries he received in a fire. He leaves a
widow, a son who is serving in the Middle East and
a daughter who is a member of the Salford Women's
Auxiliary Police Force.

London.
