Born during the June quarter 1923 in the Todmorden
R.D. - ref: 9a/334, the daughter of John & Hannah
Caveney (nee Southwell).

A tall dark girl, she resided with her parents and
two older sisters at Co-operative Street, Walsden,
near Rochdale.  She left her job in a silk factory
to volunteer for A.A. duties in the A.T.S.  She
was posted to one of the first mixed batteries.

Manning the "Predictor" at an A.A. Battery,
attached to the 505 Battery 148 (M) Heavy A.A.
Regiment, Royal Artillery.  Nora was the first ATS
girl to be killed whilst on duty at an
Anti-Aircraft Battery.  Killed by a bomb splinter
from a bomb that landed  some distance away from
the Battery.   Nora was picked up by her
commanding officer and the guns continued to fire
as a stretcher party took her back to camp.

A hut at the A.A. Site has been furnished in
Nora's memory, with a photograph of her on the
wall of a memorial.  A photograph of Nora was
published i n the Illustrated London News dated
25th April 1942 and her death was widely reported
elsewhere.
